Odd Mod Creations are luxury jewelry as wearable art…

An artist and musician out of Queens, New York, Jae “JQ” Breslow has been involved in visual art shows such as “Born This Way,” “SEA of Visibility” and “MOSAIC” supporting LGBTQ+ and mental health awareness in the arts. The COVID-19 pandemic created an opportunity out of crisis. The shutdown forced him to find a way to use his time and energy in a healthy way.

Though previously focused on pen-and-ink drawing, after learning the art of weaving chainmaille from a friend during the height of isolation, he found a niche that might otherwise never presented itself. With an interest in fashion already a big part of his self-expression (leading to have been given the nickname “JQ” by his friends), he found a way to apply this ancient artform to his own wardrobe – a choice that changed the trajectory of his creativity.

His brand Odd Mod Creations is the combination of creative expression and luxury jewelry, bringing to life each piece entirely by hand and putting genuinely personal, healing energy and satisfaction into his finished work.

The Makings of a Maker…

JQ Working on a bracelet

“Odd Mod Creations is the culmination of many facets of my personality; creativity, attention to detail and an interest in fashion, alongside a way to positively affect my mental health. The COVID-19 shutdown impacted my life in a jarring way. As a result, my previously go-to forms of creative expression were hindered by the emotional toll. I discovered that the meditative act of weaving each ring together didn’t require abstract thought, yet still yielded a very tangible, self-validating feeling of accomplishment. The finished work is an outlet for energy that I can hold in my hand, feeling genuinely satisfied. I wear them proudly as accessories to my own wardrobe & I am equally proud that others enjoy wearing them as well. The feedback from others helped motivate me to what this has become, going from an exercise in creative therapy, to passionate hobby and now starting a brand.

Every aspect of the work, from design to completion is important to me. Part of that is my 100% by-hand process. I immerse myself in each project for hours at a time. While it’s not the way to make large quantities of jewelry to sell, it’s the key part of this whole endeavor. I can put the energy into something and really make it special. This is what makes a piece an “Odd Mod Creation.” Everything I’ve made, am making & will continue to make has to fulfill that.”

A Material World…

For each design, I meticulously weave individual rings of varying sizes and metals, some as small as 1/16” (~1.6mm) in diameter until they form a particular pattern and design. My favorite metals to work with are stainless steel and titanium. Both are durable and won’t tarnish with wear. Titanium is much lighter than steel but just as durable and can be used to create beautiful jewelry in a variety of colors without the use of added dyes, coatings or plating.

I also often craft using tarnish-resistant, 935 sterling silver (Argentium®) and incorporate other elements such as crystals, ethically sourced pearls, precious and semi-precious gemstones.*

*Precious metals and materials may require special order for custom designs.
